Lough Eske – a dream of a place to start a honeymoon. Sybaritic & curled up in front of the fire, watching the moon rise over the castle, hours floating in the heated pool under glass walls or steaming in cedar saunas. Tromping the grounds in search of hidden graveyards, mystic woods, toadstools & fairyrings, mossy ruins. The lake, where stones become tiny worlds of their own, trees and grasses in miniature. Foggy cozy cold nights and drizzle days in Donegal.

    1. This was the first 2 days, so there’s a lot more! I just wish the economic boom hadn’t caused so many mcmansions and tract housing developments to be built. DRASTIC change since I was there 15 years ago. Still, I wouldn’t turn down that little red trimmed house! (new dream house, right on the edge of the lake!)

  1. Swooning over these photos! So mysterious, romantic, and gorgeous—and the Mr. looks very dapper with his umbrella at the ready! I’m from Co. Clare and have only been to Donegal once (when I was a kid and oblivious to its moody charm), but you have reminded me and convinced me that I need to take a trip up on my next visit home. Congratulations!

    1. It seems funny to Americans, I think, that the counties would be SO close and yet even people who live there don’t travel so much within Ireland. I mean, you can drive all over the country faster than you can go from LA to SF!

      Glad you liked the photos!

      1. It’s so true! I use my American husband as an excuse to travel around and actually be a tourist in Ireland; otherwise my friends and family would laugh at me for wanting to go to another county without the excuse of a wedding or funeral. The attitude is “sure, it’s all the same!” A holiday requires the crossing of water and changing of climates—an attitude I’ve had trouble shaking myself even here in the States. When we start planning vacations, I always start with South America or Australia and then remind myself that there’s SO much to see in my own backyard here (and in Ireland, too!)
        Anyway, welcome back!

    1. Ha! I keep saying that to myself.

The wedding was so hectic that we’re planning a relaxed, do nothing summer camp out in July – hope you’ll still be around!

  2. So lovely! A trip to Ireland has been on my list for a while and this looks like a must-see spot. And certainly a perfect honeymoon location! I have to agree with Jacinta, having visitors from abroad is the perfect excuse to explore your country. When I have visitors in the Netherlands I love to take them to anywhere other than the tourist spots of Amsterdam. Admittedly, I always start with another country when planning my holidays, but there are so many reasons to explore what’s around me. Thanks for the reminder* carly

  3. Ireland is such an impossible looking place. When I was there last year, I would occasionally burst out laughing because everything was just *so* much like a soft, green fairytale land. My puny camera was no match for the million shades of green and grey.
