At the beginning of March, I made a quick and dirty Facebook status update, asking if other women would want to get together to map out business plans & goals for art/work & network & inspire & brainstorm. The response seemed positive, and more and more interest in this formed in my head. So many women I know are in ruts, or trying to balance financially needing a full time job with emotionally needing their own projects, or just needing a little outside perspective and support as they move forward in new exciting ventures!
In April, a small group of us met over tea and cakes and lemonade. We talked about hopes, dreams, obstacles, and ventures. I’d wanted to be a little more structured for our first meeting, but it was an interesting and thought-provoking start.
Post-wedding, I want to have another meeting & try out some worksheets and a more strategic direction – a strong format to really launch the idea!
Some amazing women attended, including elly, Liza Ferneyhough, Kate Gibson, Kelly Brown, Kate Phillips, Olivia de Santis. So much talent!
The Order of the Rising Tide is about cultivating a spark into a roaring fire. It’s about recognizing the barriers we do run into; financial, gender, or otherwise. It’s about finding unconventional ways to get around those barriers, sharing resources, finding doors, access points, and opportunities that could otherwise have been blocked to us. It IS about believing that everything is possible, but in a logical, non-”the Secret” way — it’s about knowledge and connections and networks.
To be completely frank I’m a little tired of people telling me how easy it is to achieve anything you put your mind to, that anything is possible. It completely negates the everyday struggles of people who possibly haven’t had the education or opportunities, who come from a hand-to-mouth background, or who maybe haven’t even been given that spark of Knowing that things are possible. That is another discussion for another time, however. But! What I wanted to create with this group was a portable toolkit that anyone can use to brainstorm ideas and bring them to fruition. We may feel overwhelmed as Just One Person, but as a group we can work together, skill share, resource share, and succeed!
Here’s the first missive I sent out:
The Order of the Rising Tide: A Ladies Ship Building Society
What is it?
A group of women get together to map out plans & goals for art or work, (or next steps in life, or career ideas) & network & inspire & brainstorm.
What can I bring?
Yourself, any tools, tips, tricks, insights, or advice you may have. Friends. Snacks if you want to.
What will be provided?
Tea, cakes, worksheets, company, advice, the thrill of being in a secret society.
Why?
Sometimes, it’s easier to gain perspective from outside. What are our best skills? What connections can others make that we may have overlooked? How did someone else discover their path or calling? How can we work together? Where do we all fit? What comes next? How can I help other women? What is keeping me from achieving world domination? Why do I love cake?
Liza sent an amazing handmade thank you note!
I’m now working on a toolkit & a website where people can post about their own regional meetings, share ideas, post resources, talk about books, etc etc etc. I’m sure I won’t be able to do much before the wedding, but I wanted to share, get feedback, and start feeling inspired to tackle this again!!
What would you want to see on such a site? What would help you move forward? What do you consider your biggest obstacles to success? Would you start your own chapters?

oh things are wonderful! i’ve finally come of the black hole that ate up the last 3 years of my life. i met you right when i was in the thick of that – but in retrospect that trip was HUGE for me as it set a lot of new ideas percolating that are only now beginning to really materialize. so thank you!
i keep meeting amazing women who are involved in some kind of healing practice and it’s influencing the way i think about my art. i spent 6 months in vancouver recently and it was an exorcism – now i feel strong and ready to collaborate. a lot of things opened up, in terms of thinking about community and creativity as a conduit for magic/healing/communication. i’ve been doing more video work and have started making music again….. studying colour/light/sound therapy ….. want to start traveling & doing audio/visual performances. also thinking of going to school to study design & therapy – thinking a lot about how good design can promote psychic healing on a mass scale ….
love your blog by the way – you are always an inspiration!

YES! Yes. So good.
My biggest problems are self-discipline and maintaining focus.
I have a big big idea for the site, that I’ve been wanting to implement
online FOR YEARS! It involves a practice that we Tanglewood Sisters have been using for years, but it fell by the wayside when we started to live far away from each other. I need a designer who can help make it real! Chat soon, and I shall tell you all!

This looks awesome! I follow along here and I don’t really post to say hello much, but I had to say that this seems like a great idea. I would love to be a part of a group like that (though, as to whether I’d start one… I keep on moving countries so I have to admit it’s not too likely that I’d start a chapter since I seem to be continually in the process of setting up or moving on… but in some sort of settled alternate reality, I would do it, yes yes yes. And of course, if one day there were lots of chapters, maybe people would have more links to creative women in other places, and moving would be easier.). But this would really be a great way to address the problems around striking out there and achieving our dreams, by dispelling some of the fear surrounding starting out, or giving new perspectives to those who’ve already made the jump.
The idea of chapters makes me think back to riotgrrl days, but I loved those times, so no harm there!

I am so moved by this idea that I got tears in my eyes as I was reading it. How perfectly wonderful, how absolutely ESSENTIAL. I do hope to read more about this and that you will keep us all updated as things progress. I love the idea of a local chapter…I don’t see myself starting one, I am so shy. Sometimes I can barely make blog comments!
Still, I guess someone has to make the initial step, and sooner or later it’s got to be me, right? This has given me a lot to think about today.
Thank you, lady.

love this idea. amazing.
i’d like to apprentice myself to a shipbuilder. i feel like i have all these tiny venture ideas in my head and no space/time to explore them in. but also no idea if they are worth exploring at all. this goes along with so many other strange things going on right now in my life.
i wish there were a portland chapter. strike that — i wish i had a venture idea interesting enough to bring to a portland chapter.
coolest idea ever.

What a wonderful idea. How refreshing to be part of a group of women who want to encourage and help one another move toward their dreams without feeling competitive. Kudos to you for putting work into this important project despite how absolutely busy you must be.

:/ the internet hates me. I tried to comment yesterday, but it disappeared!
I love this and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there at the inaugural. I can’t wait to hear more & hopefully participate. I have a lot of ideas always swimming around in my head, mainly concepts about which I want to write well-researched pieces, but also a need for some focus in my life. I can’t seem to really grasp at it solidly, though

Are you inside my brain? This post and group is so wise. I’d actually been thinking of how to transition into a life-search process similar to this, but after the wedding and even forming my next blog around it. Really. My friends started something similar here in LA, but more like an intellectual/artists salon. It’s been great… but I’ve been finding that my challenges go beyond finding time to write. I’m trying to actually *find* that life spark. I know I’m dealing with a lot of barriers. I worry about life and how it’s not generally easy to chase passion (or even define it, when you have zero time.)

Yes, definitely post-wedding! But mine’s before yours, so maybe it’ll be all set for you when you emerge from the wedding cocoon!!
Time is a huge huge challenge, one of the biggest for me!

This is a fantastic and well-thought out idea! I think you will get good responses and participants as you continue forward with it. It is certainly the type of group that is needed these days, as a motivating antidote to the scattered and hectic way today’s internet-fixated society operates. Like minds joining forces but with a bit more grounding and practical application. I’ll be interested in watching its progress!

Oh my goodness — how inspiring this is! I’m amazed at your creativity to think up such a group and your lofty goals for it. It would indeed be a very helpful thing to give me space to bounce ideas of and chat about tackling obstacles. I wish I lived closer to you to join yours. Maybe once I get resettled, I’ll see if there are any great ladies in my new area who wish to brainstorm together.

Thanks! I’m hoping (post wedding, post wedding) to get together a toolkit of worksheets, resources, etc so people can take them and use with their own groups!

I love this. I read your blog, though I no longer remember how I came across it, and have enjoyed hearing about your projects. This one is particularly inspiring, and just the poke I need to get cracking. And thank you for acknowledging that some of us have a harder time manifesting our dreams, or even clearly defining those dreams.
