Late afternoon sun in the kitchen – it’s been blissfully hot the last few days, the kind of hot that relaxes your shoulders and makes every second seem like a lazy afternoon in July. People here complain about it, which I find downright silly. I love the heat.
Today I sat in the grass and fixed my bicycle flat tire under the Brugmansia (the heat makes the scent intoxicating, like smothering in sugar cookies) while outfitted in vintage pink tap pants and a grey ribbed tank top. The best outfit that will never, ever be documented. (I have a fence, don’t worry!!) I felt very accomplished after my task was complete, as it was a rear tire and I got the chain back on the derailleur, managed to pry the tire off correctly, etc. It probably took me a good hour longer than anyone else, ever, but I did it!! This book was pretty helpful. Hooray for learning new things!!
What new things have you been doing, and how did you learn them?

Did you just change the post title?
Okay, so, where was I? Ah yes. New things. We’re growing food with some friends at a place we call The Field. I’m learning new things all the time there, how to prick out teeny tiny seedlings, how fast things grow in a poly tunnel, the best way to cut asparagus, how to identify the shrill call of a vole.
And to go with the freshly cut asparagus, how to make the best ever mayonnaise and what to do with the left over whites. Yes, meringues of course.

I’m hosting more dinner parties and going to be cooking Irish food for the first time this Friday night’s gathering!
I’m learning to stop prioritising everyone over myself, while also putting my family first. It’s an odd balance.
Learning to let go of all my stuff!! Real and unreal objects that just clutter my mind/home!

I am so jealous of your weather, and the scenery! Incredible. I’m definitely moving there next spring, if I can find employment!
Your outfit also sounds divine.
My new thing is that I started a blog called ilikechicago.com – which is forcing me to do 1 new thing each week in Chicago. I’m going to do it for one year, in hopes to have a better appreciation of the city, and then I’m going to pack my bags and get out!

nath: That is so great!! Communal growing!! I need to get my little plot of garden here started before it’s too late, I never have any weekends!
Selene: Oh, clutter. It’s so cozy and so so frustrating. Ruby is having an open house for the IUH in May, so I am going to put out a vintage rack and invite people over for a vintage “salon” – hopefully move this stuff faster than the internets can! I want to come to your dinner party, will you make colcannon?
Jamie: that is so awesome, maybe it would help me like SF more. Nooo, I think I’m done with that city. But I’m loving Oakland and it’s so fun to find new cute things.

heart shaped sunbeams!
i added learn irish + learn french (must get on top of this) widget-y gizmos to my igoogle page for learning new tongues (igoogle is weird, does anyone use this? i just started playing with it out of boredom). also trying to be more receptive to signs and opportunities. i am a tiny cave dwelling hide-y being. i should stop doing this, before i become crinkly and old and unchangeable.
