Breakfast at Cafe Gratitude with Kate, a quick stop to Castle in the Air & a quick hi to the very crafty Ulla, gallery show and talk at Kala. Inspired by Binh Danh’s chlorophyll prints.

Thinking a lot about collecting information & experiences. Have we moved from documenting the present as an archival or memorial process to instead documenting the present for use as a future (or near real-time) narrative??

Just like this post.

  1. For me it’s a mix. Sometimes the process is what’s important to me so that I can learn from it for future endeavors; in these cases I’m documenting for the future. I’m also documenting for the future when it feels like time is flying past quickly and I want to remember the details and process at a later date. Journaling and photographic essays for me tend to be archival or my take on events or places I’ve been.

    1. When I document process I feel like it’s a conscious sharing effort – like a way to make that process “open source” for people online. It’s weird because I can’t recall exactly when the shift was. Not necessarily when I started blogging. Twitter, maybe?

  2. I think there can be some overlap between the two modes, but I think the latter is basically what Facebook is? Sometimes when I’m cynical I think people not only document the present but *perform* the present for the sake of that future narrative. Like all those awful awful pictures from the Vancouver riots – did they riot because they were angry or upset, or did they riot so that later they could say they rioted?
At least I think that has something to do with what you’re talking about.

    1. Yes, exactly. Sometimes I’m just really conscious of the difference in how we experience things these days. On the other hand, I do go back to blog posts I know no one else will ever go back to so I can remember the way an amazing day felt, and it’s nice to have that easily accessible.

  3. Tamera! Taking a few moments before I head into the Castle this morning to check up on whats new, and I find a lovely note from you! Its ALWAYS such a treat to see you in person, and now I’m reminded again why I love your blog so much. You take the time to answer each comment with such lovely intellect and care.
Blessings to you and yours on this Sunny and Warm Saturday!
